Area of Focus: Architecture, Construction, Bio-based Building Materials
Departments Involved: Architecture, Engineering
Executive Summary: Associate Professor of Architecture Michael Gibson collaborated with Professor of Practice Paul Karr on a paper that presented the optimized envelope and building systems for the Indian Mound Prototype Home, a project designed and built by the Net Positive Studio. Both faculty served as advisors to the student group.
Research Description: The Indian Mound Prototype Home was the Net Positive Studio’s first affordable, net zero project and was completed in 2021. While the project was under construction, Profs. Gibson and Karr collected and summarized the project’s balancing of affordability with performance goals for net zero. The project counters a number of trends in both contemporary affordability housing and high-performance zero energy homes, relying on a set of reasonable approaches that the authors present as a replicable strategy for affordable net zero homes.
